چکیده

XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) show rich spectra of X-ray absorption lines. These observations have detected a broad unresolved transition array (UTA) between 15-17 Å. This is attributed to inner-shell photoexcitation of M-shell iron ions. Modeling these UTA features is currently limited by uncertainties in the low-temperature dielectronic recombination (DR) data for M-shell iron. In order to resolve this issue, and to provide reliable iron M-shell DR data for plasma modeling, we are carrying out a series of laboratory measurements using the heavy-ion Test Storage Ring (TSR) at the Max-Plank-Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany. Currently, laboratory measurements of low temperature DR can only be performed at storage rings. We use the DR data obtained at TSR, to calculate rate coefficients for plasma modeling and to benchmark theoretical DR calculations. At temperatures where these ions are predicted to form in photoionized gas, we find a significant discrepancy between our experimental results and previously recommended DR rate coefficients. Here we report our recent experimental results for DR of Mg-like Fe XV forming Al-like Fe XIV.

Electron-ion recombination measurements of Fe, Fe, Fe motivated by active galactic nuclei x-ray absorption features

Recent spectroscopic models of active galactic nuclei have indicated that the recommended electron-ion recombination rate coefficients for iron ions with partially filled Mshells are incorrect in the temperature range where these ions form in photoionized plasmas. We have investigated this experimentally for Fe forming Fe, Fe forming Fe, and Fe forming Fe. The recombination rate coefficient was...

DIELECTRONIC RECOMBINATION OF Fe 3p IONS: A KEY INGREDIENT FOR DESCRIBING X-RAY ABSORPTION IN ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI

We have carried-out multi-configuration Breit–Pauli autostructure calculations for the dielectronic recombination (DR) of Fe – Fe ions. We obtain total DR rate coefficients for the initial ground-level which are an order of magnitude larger than those corresponding to radiative recombination (RR), at temperatures where Fe 3p (q = 2 − 6) ions are abundant in photoionized plasmas. The resultant t...

The Iron Unresolved Transition Array in Active Galactic Nuclei

The unresolved transition array (UTA) of iron M-shell ions is a prominent absorption feature in the X-ray spectrum of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Modeling photoionized plasmas in attempt to match the observed silicon and oxygen lines fail to predict the level of ionization of iron as inferred by this feature. It is suggested that the discrepancy is due to underestimation of the low-temp...

Dielectronic recombination of Fe: benchmarking the M-shell

We have carried-out a series of multi-configuration Breit–Pauli autostructure calculations for the dielectronic recombination of Fe. We present a detailed comparison of the results with the high-energy resolution measurements reported recently from the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring by Schmidt et al . Many Rydberg series contribute significantly from this initial 3s3p M-shell ion, resulting in a ...
